Research : Barriers to Foster Carer Engagement

As at March 2024, there is an urgent need for 1,000 foster carers in NSW just to meet current demand.

Foster carers are exiting the system at an alarming rate and have been for years.

In 2019 we conducted our first research project, entitled "Barriers To Foster Carer Engagement" where we interviewed 70 foster carers across NSW and asked about their foster carer experience. Some very concerning themes arose from this research which was presented to Gareth Ward - Minister Department of Communities and Justice (Formerly Family and Community Services) in July 2019.  Unfortunately, the report was met with skepticism.  We were referred to senior staff in the department by the Minister and despite attempts to start conversations to effect change we were unable to make our voices heard.
